ニュージーランド(マッカレーさん)からのお手紙!

Dear friends

We are all well, my family, Diane, Nancy, Barry Mathers, Rua & Michelle. Our homes too are relatively unscathed although my brothers home lost 2 chimneys and the water cylinder burst. We were without power for a few hours but all is back on now.

I had my mokopuna with me and it was the most terrifying minute of all of our lives. It was very very violent and of course one cant do anything at all, but in this case, hang on, for that is what it was like. Unbelievable.

As soon as i realised what was happening i raced downstairs on my backside as it was unsafe to stand up. I was frantically worried about my mokos who were sleeping on bunks but the bunks stood up to the swaying and pitching. I quickly gathered them to me and we rushed to the kitchen and dived under the table beside the stairs. Fiona a friend was staying and she found a torch and we lit candles and she started cleaning up the broken glass and crockery while i soothed my mokos who were so frightened.

They couldnt understand what was happeneing having never experienced an earthquake before so i told them that Papaatuanku was stirring, they asked why and so i explained that there are some naughty people who are doing bad things to her and that she is not happy and unwell, so then they started to sing to her, telling her they loved her and not to hurt us but to shake the other people about, it was quite sweet and poignantly beautiful all at the same time.

Yesterday afternoon i took them back into town to their Dad’s because the power and water was out and the phone went down in the afternoon. The services were on in parts of Christchurch and therefore at their place and of course they wanted to be with their Dad. On our way, Jackson asked who was Ruaumoko’s father and i told them it was Ranginui, oh yes he said, he was sad because he was seperated from Papatuanuku and maybe he was angry too because of what was happening to her ……

Anyway, my dear ones, thank you so much for sending your aroha and support to us down here rockin’ & rollin’ on the waka. We sure did hit some stormy waters.

It has been uneerily quiet and we are in for another hiding from another one of the children, this time Tawhirimatea, so battening down the hatches now as we speak.

Arohanui to you all
Makere
